Spring in Austria: Two places to watch the flowers bloom

Vienna is blooming - and here you can enjoy spring!
After the story about hidden sights in the city or in a lesser-known museum, Martin Fox is currently working on a story about possible day trips to the outskirts of Vienna – perfect for the spring weather and Easter week. Until that's finished, I have another idea for where you can enjoy the splendor of spring blossoms in Vienna. A dear friend brought it to my attention a few days ago, using a phrase typical of Viennese culture: I don't need to travel to Japan like everyone else to admire the cherry blossoms; I can simply go to the "Japanese Garden" on the Hohe Warte.

The Setagayapark in the 19th district
In fact, Vienna has had a Japanese-style garden on the Hohe Warte in the 19th district since 1992 – where the cherry trees are currently in full bloom. So, if you didn't travel to Japan for the cherry blossom season this year, you can get a glimpse of what it looks like there. Unfortunately, the sky was overcast during my visit, so the colors aren't quite as impressive. But you'll get a sense of the garden and perhaps the incentive to go there yourself and take a stroll.

The apricot blossom in the Wachau

Because I recently had the pleasure of taking a trip to the Wachau region: what the cherry blossoms are in Japan, the apricot blossoms are there. The buds have just opened this year, and the delicate green of the spring landscape is mingled with the many white "dots" of the apricot trees, beautifully framed by the other colors of the bushes already in full bloom. An absolute recommendation for an Easter trip! In addition to the impressive landscape, there are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy a good glass of Wachau white wine at a friendly wine tavern or winery.
